Affiliate Marketing-Does It Really Work?
by Melissa Cranford

Affiliate Marketing is quickly becoming a popular catch phrase when it comes to making money online. More and more people are beginning to try their hand at making money as an affiliate because it seems like an easy work at home opportunity. Many times, it can be an easy way to earn money because there are many benefits to working as an affiliate. First, you don't have to carry an inventory. You are only selling the vendor's products, and they are in charge of distributing them to the customer. Most often, affiliates sell products that can be delivered electronically, which means they are not really carrying a tangible product either. That is one reason many vendors can afford to pay affiliates to help them market their goods. Another reason being an affiliate is appealing is that you never have to talk to customers. You are marketing the product online, and the customer can view the information, and make their own decision about purchasing. If they do purchase, you get the commission, and you don't ever have to provide customer service. Once again, the vendor will handle all the responsibilities related to their product, and you will receive the agreed upon commission amount. Finally, working as an affiliate gives you the flexibility to work as much or as little as you want. Of course, the more time you put into it, the greater the return, and you have no boss and no deadlines to meet. Plus, if you want to work at midnight, you can! Many people enjoy having choices to decide how and when they want to make their money.

Because there are so many scams floating around out there, many people are scared to join affiliate programs. Although there are some scams, most programs are legitimate and can help you earn good money. Look for companies that have been in business for a long time, and have all of their contact information readily displayed. Always be wary of any company or site that has no contact information anywhere. There should always been an address, a phone number, email information, and customer support. These companies are reputable and welcome all of the possible sales an affiliate can bring to them, so of course they are willing to help you and answer your questions. Don't be afraid to contact these companies, and see how long their response time is, and what kind of response you get. You should never have to pay to work as an affiliate. You may have to pay to access different kinds of information, but signing up to start out with the company should always be free.

Another thing to check is how much you will get paid for each item you sell and how often they will pay you. You want to be sure you're promoting an item that is actually going to bring you a decent commission. Also, you would ideally like to get paid at least every 2 weeks, especially if you want to use some of this money to invest in further advertising. Although you can advertise completely for free, you may decide to start paying for some of your advertising if you find you're successful in making sales.

Check into what kinds of products the companies you want to work with sells. Make sure it is a product that has mass appeal, and has a good price point. There's no point in trying to sell something that only a few people will want to buy. Also, if you find a good product, there should be very few refunds. Your commission will be no good if refunds are continually being issued for the product. This seems like common sense, but many times no one thinks about the sale being refunded, and that is definitely something to consider. Finally, make sure they offer a guarantee for their product, just in case they have any unhappy customers.

Now that you've signed up to be an affiliate, found a reputable company to work with, and found some awesome hot products to sell, you need to get out there and promote, promote, promote! There is no way to make sales, if no one knows your product exists! You can sign up with traffic exchanges, place classified ads, use pay per click advertising, just to name a few. Research these suggestions and do searches for ways to promote your products. You want to be as cost efficient as possible at first so that you can maximize your profits. If you begin to bring in some good sales, then expand your advertising and put some money into it. Every time you start to do well, look into how you can do even better. Always be on the lookout for the next big thing! The internet changes fast, and you have to ready to change with it!

Hopefully you'll decide to try your hand at affiliate marketing and see what it can do for you. It is a real way to generate income, but you need to start slowly and take your time. As with any business, you have to build it up and work hard at first. As time passes, you will have a lot of work behind you, and many of your products will continue to sell without you having to do much. If things don't work as well as you would like, don't give up! Keep trying, look for other products, other advertising methods, and try again! You never know what might work, and it never hurts to try! Think about how excited you'll be when that first affiliate check comes in the mail!
