Picking a good affiliate program
by Anton Goldman
It seems that almost every major online shopping site has an affiliate
program. With so many to choose from, which one do you decide upon.
Do you want to make money with pay per click advertising (PPC)? Do you
want to make money with pay per lead or pay per sale advertising? Once a
sales or confirmed lead is made, you generate a commission. It could be a
flat rate or a percentage. I've seen commission range anywhere from 2% - 50%
of the product or service price. This can be quite a bit of extra money
coming simply by refering traffic to another site.
Selecting the affiliate program
Choosing the affiliate relationship is simpler than you think. Think
about the things you already like to search and browse for on the Internet.
If you are in to music, there are many affiliates that pay for promoting
music downloading services, music CDs, music T-shirts, collectibles and
more. What if you're a movie buff? Movie downloads, online movie sites,
movie rentals ... you get the idea. Why try to promote something that you
may not have interest in?
I basically pick affiliate programs for the products that I believe in,
for the products I currently use, for products and services I intend to use
as well. I also pick affiliate programs that pay good percentages or
flat-rates.
How do I do this? I like to watch TV and see what people are
advertising. Many times, these products that are advertised offer an
affiliate program. So now you have to do some research and figure out how to
join their affiliate program.
Many times these companies will have relationships with 3rd party
companies that manage and distribute funds for the company. They also
provide you with HTML code and banners for you to place on your website or
emails, making it simple for you to make money.
Here's a partial list of popular affiliate programs:

These programs are free to join and you can chose from various companies
to market, promote and generate extra money.
Automotive, music, technology, books, posters and more.
2nd question to ask is what to promote
Try to determine what is hot. What's hot in the news, what's hot in
technology, what's hot at your local shopping mall. If you think cell phones
are hot, then find affiliates that sell phones and cell phone accessories.
I personally chose to go with VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), where
you can make unlimited long distance calls over the internet for next to
nothing. In my opinion, it's the next big thing. You can choose from
companies like Skype, Vonage and ZingoTel, where they pay phenomenal
commissions for directing traffic to their websites.
Talk alot = make alot!
From one voip affiliate, I had 4 orders in one day and made over $100 in
commissions. To me that is amazing for simply placing banners on my website.
It helps to have lot's of traffic coming to your website, but then again,
you traffic could be specific as well. If you have a website geared towards
the younger crowd, anything tech related will do. If you have a business
website, tech products work as well. This theory could go on and on and many
people write about affiliate programs in detail, I'm simply here to give you
a taste. Here's an example of the various VOIP deals online.
This industry is only getting hotter and you've probably seen ads all
over the place for voip services. Some companies are offering unlimited
calling for a low rate with various features included.
